Sharing Coastal Ocean Explorers: Sharks at the National Marine Educators Association 2022 Conference

In early July, the New York State Marine Education Association hosted the National Marine Educators Association’s 2022 Annual Conference at Hofstra University in Hempstead, NY. For the first time, the conference was hybrid with both virtual and in-person offerings focused on this year’s theme, “Charting the Course with Perseverance.” ANGARI Foundation’s Director of Science Education & Advancement, Amanda Waite, and Laura García Barcia, Lead Scientist for our Coastal Ocean Explorers: Sharks program in collaboration with Florida International University’s College of Arts, Sciences & Education, were in attendance. In addition to participating in numerous sessions and networking with our current and potential future collaborators, they also presented in a concurrent session on Sunday July 10th. During their talk, entitled “Using shark research to engage students in science and conservation both on land and at sea,” they were able to share our Coastal Ocean Explorers: Sharks education program and curriculum with an engaged and inquisitive group of informal and formal educators from across the United States. We want to thank all that joined them and look forward to working with many in attendance soon!
