PRESENTER BIO

Joe Merchant is a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, at the Weather Forecasting Office located in Lubbock, Texas. He received his B.S. in Meteorology from the University of Massachusetts, Lowell and M.Eng. in Space Engineering from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Joe has extensive field research experience working on projects focused on severe storms and cloud seeding. His current research focuses on shark location and seabreeze development and began after noticing an unusual cluster of shark attacks that occurred off the coast of the Carolinas back in 2015. This collaborative research served as the inspiration behind National Geographic’s SharkFest documentary ‘Forecast: Shark Attack’.

Ocean Expert Exchange is a live educational webinar series featuring experts in marine science and technology, many of whom have participated in expeditions onboard R/V ANGARI. The 30-minute live events welcome audiences of all ages and include a presentation on the speaker’s area of expertise followed by Q&A with participants. The series is co-hosted by ANGARI Foundation and the University of Florida Thompson Earth Systems Institute’s Scientist in Every Florida School program.
