Pinellas County High School Girls Participate in Oceanography Program With ANGARI and USF

Tampa, Florida (June 16, 2023) ─ ANGARI Foundation hosted Pinellas County high school students as they participated in hands-on marine science instruction during the University of South Florida (USF) College of Marine Science’s Oceanography Camp for Girls (OCG). From June 7 to 9, the Foundation welcomed the campers aboard their 65-foot research vessel R/V ANGARI to practice collecting and evaluating scientific samples and data from different sites in the Tampa Bay.

OCG is a three-week ocean science exploration program for ninth-grade girls living in Pinellas County. The program is aimed at motivating young women entering high school to explore careers in science. Under the guidance of University of South Florida research scientists and science mentors, campers practiced oceanographic field methods and gathered environmental data from the atmosphere and water using a variety of scientific tools.

The OCG was founded in 1991 by the former dean of the USF College of Marine Science and two Pinellas County high school science teachers. Currently led by Dr. Teresa Greely, program director and science educator at the USF College of Marine Science, the camp is offered every year for free to 30 young women of all cultural and economic backgrounds.

“I started as a student participant in this program more than 30 years ago,” said Greely. “From my own experience, I’ve learned how exposure and active engagement with ocean and marine life exploration can help shape your life.”

“We are excited to once again take part in, and support, the Oceanography Camp for Girls,” said Angela Rosenberg, president of ANGARI Foundation and captain of R/V ANGARI. “We recognize the importance of providing and participating in programs that empower and inspire young women to explore careers in science.”

This is ANGARI Foundation’s sixth year supporting the research cruise for the camp, and is the OCG’s 32nd anniversary, marking more than three decades of inspiring young women to explore the ocean and pursue scientific careers.

About Oceanography Camp for Girls
Oceanography Camp for Girls (OCG) is an annual, three-week summer ocean science exploration program for young women in Pinellas County, hosted by the College of Marine Science at the University of South Florida. The mission is to inspire and motivate young women entering high school to consider career opportunities in the sciences. OCG provides hands-on, real-world experiences in both laboratory and field environments. Professors, research scientists, and graduate students at USF provide scientific mentoring, and alumnae campers serve as peer mentors to “new” campers, while enhancing their own communication and leadership skills. Under the interdisciplinary umbrella of oceanography, participants are directly involved in disciplines where women and minorities are most often underrepresented: chemistry, geology, physics, engineering, and mathematics.
