Generation Ocean: Coral Reefs
Science [Middle & High School]
A flexible series of activities that allow students to explore coral reef science. Students learn about the methods scientists use to study and understand reef health, including coral bleaching, and navigate through the scientists’ open access resources and data from reefs in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary.

Meet Skye, a friendly 2.5 meter juvenile male manta ray living off Florida’s east coast. Skye appears here as a 3D model with stunning detail and accuracy- from his anatomy, identifying scars, markings and texture, to the life-like animation of his motions during swimming and feeding. This model can be viewed on a computer, experienced via augmented reality or virtual reality or even downloaded for 3D printing!

Experience the remarkable migration of thousands of blacktip sharks along the Florida coast! You’ll be immersed working alongside Florida Atlantic University scientist Dr. Stephen Kajiura and the FAU Elasmobranch Lab team as they take to the sea and the sky to study some of South Florida’s most exciting shark species.

Meet Nemesis, an approx. 3.3 meter long female great hammerhead that overwinters in Bimini in The Bahamas. Nemesis is depicted here as the most accurate 3D model of a great hammerhead shark ever created. The model can be viewed on a computer, experienced via augmented reality or virtual reality or even 3D printed!

Join Dr. Ian Enochs and his team for an expedition onboard R/V ANGARI to the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary to study coral reefs. Survey the health of a coral reef using SCUBA and camera equipment, collect a coral core and take it back to the lab for scanning, and visit the Experimental Reef Lab to learn more about ongoing experiments.

Ocean Expert Exchange is a live educational webinar series featuring experts in marine science and technology. The 30-minute live events welcome audiences of all ages and include a presentation on the speaker’s area of expertise followed by Q&A. Recordings of the live events are available with complementary educational content for those wanting to dive deeper into the topic.

In addition to learning about our panelists work, the audience had the opportunity to have their questions answered by the experts. Live panel event aired Sept. 30, 2020 with scientists from Bahamas Marine Mammal Research Organisation, Friends of the Environment and Perry Institute for Marine Science. They shared impacts of the Cat 5 storm on communities and marine life in The Bahamas and answered audience questions.
