ANGARI Foundation Launches New Deployment Site for 12th Lagoon Drift Card Experiment
West Palm Beach, Florida (November 14, 2024) – The ANGARI Foundation introduced its newest deployment site for its 12th Lake Worth Lagoon Drift Card Study experiment. On November 14 at 10 a.m., the Foundation released small, bright orange, eco-friendly wooden drift cards to track water movement and pollutants in the Lake Worth Lagoon, Intracoastal Waterway, and Palm Beach County waters.
The Foundation’s newest deployment site, a private property on the Intracoastal Waterway in North Palm Beach, will fill in an existing gap in the data collection of water flow and debris between the Lake Worth Lagoon and Jupiter.
Members of the public are encouraged to take to shorelines in the region to recover and report the eco-friendly, degradable wooden drift cards that may wash ashore. The drift cards are 4-by-6-inch, bright orange, and have been decorated by community members, including students from Independence Middle School, Palm Beach Day Academy, The Benjamin School, and Wellington High School. Drift cards were also decorated by community members during this year’s LagoonFest.
ANGARI Foundation’s Lake Worth Lagoon Drift Card Study partners include Friends of Manatee Lagoon, Friends of Palm Beach, Independence Middle School, Manatee Lagoon, Palm Beach Day Academy, The Benjamin School, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 5-2, and U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 5-4, and they assisted with the deployment of drift cards this November. After the coordinated release from seven different sites, the cards will now float on the water’s surface and be carried by local currents and tides.
Citizen scientists are relied on to recover and keep the drift cards, reporting the location, date, and time found, along with a photo of the card to the email address [email protected].
During prior experiments, drift cards have been reported as far north as New Smyrna Beach, and as far south as the Hillsboro Inlet. Historically, drift card recovery rates for the study have been high. ANGARI Foundation and its partners use this project as a tool to engage the community in conversations about human impacts on the environment, including plastic pollution and other types of marine debris, and the effects they have on marine life, while observing water and potential pollution movement in our local waterways.
